March 21, 2014
On the verge of completing a bit of a makeover that will give our SJHHS career center a more “Starbucks-like” feel, the center is out to help students succeed in their future career path and have an opportunity to pursue in life.
If you’re not sure what to do, the career center can help you plan for post-college life.
The career center is directed by Ann Bergen, the career guidance specialist. It is open from 8am – 4:30pm. Bergen says you can drop in or schedule an appointment. SJHHS career center is apart of the South Coast ROP and Bergen represents them at SJHHS. Bergens job on campus is to oversee the campuses ROP, which stands for Regional Occupational Program.
“Our ROP program here on campus is very popular compared to other schools. We have probably over 400 students in an ROP class any given semester and about 30% of our junior and seniors at any given time take an ROP class,” says Bergen.
According to Bergen, Mr. Ressler had a very strong ROP program at his previous school, Capo Valley High School, and is now creating SJHHS ROP program to become very popular and strong.
Not just does Bergens career center focus on ROP, but she also puts together the many college visits here at SJHHS.
“We had about 50 different colleges visit our campus last fall in a 6 week period,” says Bergen.
There has been many colleges from all over the country visit SJHHS and even a few international colleges, according to Bergen.
Many students may be thinking they want to get their first job and raise their own money before focusing on college. At the career center, a job board is accessible to all students.
Bergen helps students prepare for their first job by helping them prep for job applications, job interviews, and creating a resume.
Bergen says, “I coach students to help them with interviewing and what to put on their job applications.”
In the career center, Bergen has all types of things you can do to prepare for an interview, and not just for jobs but for college interviews.
“Another option is is to join the ROP internship class. That will help students learn job skills when they go out and get a real job. ROP is definitely a resume builder,” says Bergen.
The career center is available to all students and to help them decide what they can do in life to succeed. Bergen is their to help you find what you want to do and to fit your personality.
