When the word “bullying” comes to mind, people usually think of the typical Hollywood-produced image with kids being thrown into dumpsters and badgered for their lunch money. However, recent forms of student harassment are no longer physical but rather directed towards their victims’ weaknesses; their emotions.
As new forms of communication technologies are being developed in this fast-paced world, the issue of cyber-bullying has arisen in today’s schools increasingly. For those who are not familiar with the term, cyber-bullying is the act of targeting a person through the use of digital devices. Such acts of harassment can be found on internet sites including Facebook, MySpace, email, instant messaging, texting, and any other source of communication by way of technology.
Mr. Briggs agrees that this is a large issue in high schools now days and stated that, “[his] generation didn’t have these things growing up.”
Cyberbullying affects the lives of students being targeted immensely and can have devastating effects. As student Kasey Stetter said, “People need to think twice before they hit send because it could really hurt someone and cause them to act irrationally.”
This form of bullying is in ways even more dangerous than physical bullying because it is internally damaging. Although this issue is very hazardous for the students being affected, the solution can be simple is addressed in the correct way. Kids can talk to a counselor or trusted if they have a serious problem.
Reporting bullies has been made so much easier especially at SJHHS due to the introduction of Text-A-Tip. This program is a way for students to anonymously give the administration tips about student issues.
All students need to do is text any leading information to the number (949) 607-8463 and SJHHS administrators will handle the situation.
As senior Sophia Higuchi said, “Kids get scared to report bullies because they don’t want things to get worse and they don’t want the bullies to attack them anymore than they already do, so doing it anonymously through Text-A-Tip is really encouraging and helpful when someone wants to report.”
Students need to know that at SJHHS is a safe environment and if the situation is handled correctly then they can easily resolve their problems with the click of a button.
