The Conjuring: Last Rites hit the theaters on September 5, 2025 as the ninth and final movie in the Conjuring universe. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine Warren in what is said to be their last paranormal case.
The Conjuring Movies are based on the alleged real life paranormal cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, each film is drawn from their case files, but often with significant creative manipulation. The movies have been a big influence majorly the horror genre, so this movie being a finale to the series is not only a landmark for the films but the entire horror genre as a whole.
The movie started off its release in the one spot at box offices, bringing in more than $153 million nationwide as of September 26th marking its success.
From the start the film was like what you would expect, demonic images, evil laughter and floating objects and all. It never really felt super scary, it was very similar to what has been seen in other Conjuring movies so it was very predictable in that way.
This story is about Ed and Lorraine’s daughter Judy, played by Mia Tomlinson and how she is being brought into the world of paranormality and her parents’ investigations, the Loraines are tasked with helping a family called the Smurls in Pennsylvania who are being haunted. The evil is connected to a haunted mirror that is connected to the Warrens. Overall the story is easy to follow and somewhat predictable compared to prior Conjuring movies.
Wilson and Farmiga are good as always, they know their characters well that they have been playing for over 12 years, The Smurl family and other smaller characters did a good job making it feel real and life threatening.
The scene that scared me the most was when one of the characters who are being haunted began to throw up glass which was very gory. The movie was two hours and 15 minutes long so not too long and the ending was satisfying when the Warrens inevitably defeated the evil.
The best part of the film were the things people like about the Conjuring movies, like the Warren family and the life threatening thrills. The movie does what fans would expect from a Conjuring movie, It has creepy moments, jump scares and a clear story that wraps up the Warrens story. It gives a solid wrap up and conclusion to the Conjuring series and is definitely worth a watch on the big screen before it’s gone.
