History was made at the 2025 Grammys 67th award ceremony.
Since rap became a Grammys’ category in 1989 only three black women have won best rap album.
Representing women, especially women of color, Doechii became the third woman to win Best Rap Album and has made history for the rap and hip hop music industry.
“I bared my life, I went through so much. I dedicated myself to sobriety and God told me I would be rewarded and he would show me just how good it can get,” said Doechii at the Grammy Awards.
Cardi B who was the second female to win best rap album announced the win for Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal.
The late 90s was truly a stepping stone for music, especially for aspiring female rappers. Lauryn Hill won Best Rap Album, Album Of The Year, and Best New Artist for The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill.
“Her five solo GRAMMY wins for 1998, she became the first woman to win five or more awards in a single night,” said GRAMMY AWARDS.
Cardi B’s song ‘Be Careful’ was a sample of Lauryn Hill’s ‘Ex-Factor’ which received a nomination for Best Rap Performance. Yet she won Best Rap Album for Invasion Of Privacy at the 61st Grammy Awards.
Doechii who goes by “Swamp Princess” shares her struggle and becomes vulnerable with the media. Through her melodies she tells stories of exes, drugs, and other hardships.
“I felt like it was necessary for me to tell my story in detail and in many different ways, through many different beats. And it was important for us to go in chronological order of what has happened to me, how that has made me feel, how I overcame it, and where I am now,” said Doechii on Rolling Stone.
It is refreshing for celebrities to be relatable and share their stories. She gives inspiration to talented girls who have constantly been put down for their race, gender, religion, and financial status.
“I know there is some Black girl out there and I want to tell you that you can do it. Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes onto you. . . you are exactly who you need to be to where you are, and I am a testimony,” said Doechii.
Swamp Princess has made musical history. Her, Cardi B, and Lauryn Hill are empowering and inspirational from their vulnerability, confidence, and talent.
