The Slight Edge Book Review
June 12, 2015
The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson, if done with persistence and dedication, will dramatically shape how the reader views the world and themselves.
“The Slight Edge is a way of thinking that enables you to make the daily choices that will lead you to the success and happiness you desire. Learn why some people make dream after dream come true, while others just continue dreaming and spend their lives building someone else.
“The Slight Edge is not just another self-help tool for traveling the path to success. It is the doorway to creating powerful results in any area of your life, by using tools you already hold within you” –Jeff Olsen.
The Slight Edge is a simple tool to help people take other self help books and actually put them into action.
For instance: doing and completing homework. Is it easy to do? Sure it is. Is it easy not to do? Absolutely. But, those who do the simple little tasks, such as completing homework and studying, that may seem insignificant, are the people who succeed in life.
Another good example would be exercising. Is it easy to workout? Sure it is. One may feel tired and sore afterwards, but the rewards outweigh the costs. If one were to continue to exercise for the rest of the week, with one day of rest, then there will be a difference in that person’s appearance and overall health. Although, the person must commit.
By committing to these tasks consistently everyday, then the compounded effect of all of these small, seemingly insignificant tasks will kick in and lead the way for success. The change will not be visible instantaneously, but if those small disciplines are repeated consistently, then, before long, it will become a habit; and a valuable habit at that.
“Sow an act, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny” -Charles Reade.
“Your philosophy,” Olden says, “creates your attitude, which creates your actions, which creates your results, which creates your life.”
That philosophy that will propel you up the ladder to success in anything you want in life is this:
This is the philosophy that will keep anyone who wants to be successful on the path to success.
Thomas J. Watson, the famous Chairman and CEO of International Business Machines (IBM), once said, “If you want to increase your success rate, double your failure rate.”
Now, failing may appear to be a bad thing, yet it is so immensely important on the path toward success because when we fail, we learn from our mistakes and improve upon them. That’s it. Move on, build upon it, and keep that new learned information with you for the rest of your life.
For instance, let’s say a student forgets to do her homework. Well, that’s unfortunate. But, in the future, if that student is curious as to whether she has homework or not, she would remember that incident and ask a friend, email the teacher, or do the assignment anyway. She would find a way to solve her problem and she would move on and improve upon this.
She would also understand that this failure is an extraordinarily small part in the big picture of life, but it still matters greatly. She will understand that no failure will stop her from achieving her goals and dreams. She will not give up.
“The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step” -Laozi.
Everything begins with a penny; or an idea. If you take that idea and add to it every single day, building upon it and contributing new actions and information to it, then, it will increase 100% within a month.
The absolute best way to make these goals and dreams more real is to write them down.
Think of something that you want. It could be to lose weight, to exercise more, to buy a new car, to have more money, to improve school grades, whatever. Grab a piece of paper and write down your personal development, health-related, financial, spiritual, career, and relationship goals. Make them as specific as possible.
Examples:
Personal Development Goals: Open up about my feelings more, do not be afraid to speak in front of a crowd, etc. Finish these goals by July 30, 2015.
Health-Related Goals: Go for a run three days a week, cut out ALL candy bars, be able to do 15 pushups, etc. Finish these goals by July 30, 2015.
Career Goals: Read 10 pages of a book on [enter subject here] everyday, contact/email a professional [enter future career here], do more research on [enter career here], etc. Finish these goals by July 30, 2015.
Financial Goals: Earn $50 by the end of every week dog walking, spend less money on food and clothes, put money in my bank account every month, etc. Finish these goals by July 30, 2015.
Relationship Goals: Talk to new people everyday, spend more time with a person and ask them what their dreams and goals are, tell my family I love them everyday, etc. Finish these goals by July 30, 2015.
Spiritual Goals: Go to church every Sunday, pray every night, become closer with my church, etc. Finish these goals by July 30, 2015.
If one just commits to their goals, understands and applies the Slight Edge philosophy, that everything in life is easy to do, but also easy not to do, then there certainly will be a dramatic change in that person’s life. It’s so simple, yet 95% of people do not do this.
This book has changed my life dramatically and has been one of the best things to have entered into my life. I am completely confident that if anyone were to buy this book, read it thoroughly, apply it to their life and commit to their goals and dreams, then they will be surprisingly and exceptionally successful in all of their endeavors.
