SJHHS dance performed in the theater on Feb. 6 and 7, and successfully captured the audience with a variety of student choreographed dances.

The dance show was called Masterpiece and the dancers conveyed the background stories of many art pieces such as the United States Marine Corps War Memorial.

“Welcome Home,”  was the most patriotic act, and it showed the history behind the Iwo Jima Memorial. The dancers formed the famous statue with a few of the performing dancers dressed as the servicemen who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

“It was a lyrical dance and it was based off the Statue of Iwo Jima,” said Audrey Schreiner (10), one of the dancers dressed up as a serviceman.

Another engaging act of the show was a dance based on a portrait of Queen Victoria.

and was choreographed by an advanced dance group consisting of Maddie Butler, Lily D’Ambrosio, Lany Newman, and Annie Rutkowski,” said Delaney MacAllister (11), a member of the beginning-intermediate class.

The students spent over a month preparing for the show, and they were responsible for every element for the show.

“We did not start practicing right after Fusion. Groups began to form for the show in late December, and for 6 weeks we collaborated, creating choreography and choosing music, themes, and costumes to accompany our piece,” said MacAllister.

Now that the dance program is finished with Masterpiece, they are excited to start working on their next show.

“Choreographer’s Ball is May 22 and 23, we reserve a week and a half prior for tech, dress rehearsal and dancers preview,” said Jordyn Margolis (10), an advanced dancer.
