SJHHS’s Commercial Music class rocked the theater on Thursday, June 5 at 7PM. Each band formed in the class played a small set, performing the songs they practiced throughout the year.

This course taught the basics and professional side of using technology, as well as the business side of the music industry.

In the class, taught by Dean McElroy, students learned how to play guitar, bass, keyboard, vocals, and drums, and six bands were formed in the second week of the school year. Each band was assigned a genre to focus on and performed songs in the quad and lunch to practice for the show.

Although the basics of the instruments were taught, experienced musicians were encouraged to join the class. Students with past experience and knowledge of instruments and music learned a deeper side to the music industry.

With the knowledge the students received from the class, the six bands performed the show in the theater, giving other students the chance to listen to their hard work.

For some of the commercial music students, this was their first time performing on a stage and first time performing their music, so the opportunity was a once in a lifetime chance.
