Dance is gradually drawing the year to a close with their annual spring performance in May. Opening night is expected to be May 23rd followed by an encore show on the 24th, with tickets ranging from $14-17 depending solely on location and ASB discount.
Performers have been preparing for the show since mid-February as they strategically put each number together. “We separate it so that we’re working in blocks. There will be a month where we work on one dance, and the we’ll work on something else for about three weeks before switching to something else, and so forth,” said Sammy Yarnell, Advanced dancer. Yarnell will be performing in eight dances, one alongside Lizzy Schmitt.
“It’s cool to see dance, even if you’re not a dancer,” said Schmitt, “You guys should come see it!”
San Juan Hill’s dance instructor, Kristine Calder, has worked to compile virtually all genres of dance to intrigue every audience member. “It’s literally a mish-mash, each person is different, so if you like hip-hop, you’re going to look forward to the hip-hop numbers” said Calder.
“Lizzy and I are choreographing a pointe dance, so I’m excited for that,” said Tara DiGiovacchino. “There’s something for everyone. It’s fun, it’s entertaining to watch your friends dance.”
“The people who have been to our shows before, they always look forward to the production number. They always coming in and say, ‘Oh, what are you doing for production this year?’ And I always say, ‘I’m not going to tell you! wait ‘till you see the show,” said Calder.
Dancers are anticipating the extravagant finale and advise the audience to look out for it. “There’s a production at the end and it’s going to be awesome,” said Lizzy, to which Sammy added, “ya, there’s always one big, long dance at the end and it’s always like a million different sections with cool props and stuff– that’s always the big shebang.”
