Countless directors and general films alike were snubbed for an Academy Award this year. Deserving candidates such as Ben Affleck and Skyfall were ignored by the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). 2013 marked the 85th annual award show; so why, after so many years of Oscar distribution, were so many worthy contenders left unmentioned?
Even while 2012 was a huge year for movie franchises with releases such as Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Avengers making headlines, the Academy managed to overlook their outstanding reviews.
Ben Affleck, who managed to go undetected for his applauded work as the director of Argo, claimed redemption when he won “Best Director” at the Critic’s Choice awards as well as the Golden Globes and good-heartedly thanked the Academy for his accomplishment.
Kathryn Bigelow, the first woman to win an award for “Best Director” in honor of her creation, The Hurt Locker, sunk back into obscurity albeit her feat in depicting the capture and killing of Osama Bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty.
Despite the rocky start experienced this year, hopefully 2014 will possess a more forgiving perspective towards its nominees.
