Comedy Sportz is a unique club sport that matches schools to see which team can think faster, crack the best jokes, and rack up the most points. The club sparked its season at Capo Valley High School on Thursday, January 17.
Leading the first team was Graham Morris, followed by Anton Emmerton, Dylan Devaney, and Matt Volk who battled it out against Capo for the first half. Amongst the games played were “Game Day,” “Dubswitch,” “Four Square,” and 185. These are all fast-paced games that test the mind power and reflexes of players by continuously bouncing random topics off of the audience and other players which makes the game absolutely unpredictable. The referee mediated the games by calling out those who pause or say something that does not coincide with the topic.
“Four Square” and “Dubswitch” were both games where players were paired up and given a random topic to center a short skit around (a hectic honeymoon in Australia, a pair of coworkers taking a trip to the spa, and two men screaming at the top of their lungs). 185 offered another scenario where players had to quickly think of a punchline based on an object given by the crowd.
Dylan Devaney was given the subject, wrenches, and came up with the punch line, “185 wrenches walk into a bar. The bartender says ‘Get out or I’ll call the cops!’ and the wrenches say ‘Guys we’re screwed!’” At the end of the first half, Capo lead a close game: 17 to 13.
Milo Simpson led his team through the second half with Sydney Barys, Ryan Kirkham, and James Brown. The first game of the half was an improv game called, “Try That on For Size.” The game matched a player from each team against each other and assigned them an action to repeat with a different description of the action.
Another memorable game SJHHS won was “Yearbook,” an improv game where players strike a pose and switch off describing the other characters. The SJHHS team posed as members of the Amish Club in a club photo.
Characters such as the famous Hannah Montana, an easily forgettable club president, a teen addict to his iPhone, and a kid who had a tendency to break out in spasms were included in the skit. SJHHS ended this round still behind: 22 to 18.
The final round of the match depended on the game, “Instructions” where players had to quickly make up directions for random items (Frozen Peas, Inflatable Dining Hall, Whale, and Buzz Lightyear). Unfortunately SJHHS lost their final game and the match: 32 to 18, but they will have another shot at victory next match on February 22.
