At San Juan Hills High School, Key Club is a branch of Kiwanis that focuses on local community service projects. .
Kiwanis is a service organization that helps foundations such as Unicef, March of Dimes, etc. Each club is in a different division. The SJHHS Key Club is a part of division 41 South. Other high schools like Capo, Laguna, Dana, SM, Mission, etc. are part of division 41 South as well.
Division 41 South’s focus is “Eliminate”, which is an organization that helps fight maternal and neonatal tetanus.
“The purpose of Key Club is to provide opportunities for students at San Juan Hills to volunteer in their community and at school,” says Treasurer, Cara Lapes (12).
Key Club is an common club that is represented at most high schools. Three years ago, SJHHS had Key Club but the club was not renewed after the president had graduated.
This year, the new club president, Erin Moon (12), decided to carry out Key Club again at SJHHS. They hope to make the club grow at SJHHS, so that many students can participate in their community services. After she graduates, she plans on passing the club to an underclassman.
“Our goal for the year is to have Key Club grow within our school,” said Moon.
In the month of December, Key Club focuses on a project to sell christmas candy grams during the last two weeks before winter break.
“We are selling Holiday Grams to help fund Operation Christmas Child which is an organization that collects shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, personal items, and other small gifts for children in need,” said Vice President, Ashley Dickman (12).
Key Club comes up with new projects every month, to provide services to the community.
“Our members come up with new projects all the time at our meetings, were focusing on raising money and awareness to certain foundations,” said Moon.
Meetings for Key Club are held once a month in Mr. Baker’s classroom in H211 at lunch.
