Coach Iavarone gives wide receiver Austin Cook (12) a pre-game pep talk before the first home game against Canyon High School. This is Cook’s final season playing football at SJHHS and he is looking forward to what the season has in store.

Triumphant cheers echoed through the hills on Friday, September 5th, as the Stallions dominated the visiting Canyon Comanches with a score of 23-6 in their first home game of the season.

The dominance started on the Stallions second drive of the game when running back Devin Wegis broke a 62 yard touchdown run to give the Stallions an early lead to build off of. It wasn’t long before the Stallions defense joined the act, and the following drive they forced a safety which expanded their lead to 9-0.

This defensive stand was a sign of more success to come for the Stallions as their defense only allowed a measly 6 offensive points to the Comanches. This defensive attacked was led by Tim Newman and Griffin Grutz, as Newman recorded 9 tackles as well as a sack, and Grutz intercepted 2 passes thrown by Comanches quarterback Jason Harman.

With the stout defensive performance, the offense was able to find its legs toward the end of the second quarter and into the second half, as Quarterback Patrick O’brien combined for over 300 all purpose yards as well as a rushing and passing touchdown to wide receiver Jacob Huff. The victory moved the Stallions to 1-1 in the young season, and sent the energized crowd home happy.
