Recent Attacks Bring Up Gun Control Argument

The recent tragedies in Paris, Colorado, California, and other places bring up the controversial question that no one can seem to agree on: should we have stricter gun control?

Last month, there was an attack on Paris that left over 100 dead and hundreds more injured. Just hours before the attack, President Obama said that ISIS was contained, but hours after the attack,  ISIS claimed to have been behind the attacks via social media.

On December 2nd, there was an attack in San Bernardino that left 14 people dead at an office Christmas party. Behind the deadly attack, a husband and his wife, who had clearly prepared for the attack. Following this attack, President Obama and the 2016 Democratic candidates took to the media that gun control must be strictened. The Republican candidates sent their thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families, but the liberal media went after them quickly with covers including “God isn’t fixing this”.

Democrats are arguing that having more gun control would lead to less mass shootings, but would doing this actually save lives?

Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, but has a high amount of gun violence. This proves that having more gun control does not necessarily lead to less gun violence.

“The gun laws in Chicago only restrict the law-abiding citizens and they’ve essentially made the citizens prey,” said Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association

Harsher gun laws would not have saved any lives in Paris or San Bernardino, but may have cost lives. If one or two people had guns in a concert in Paris or a Christmas party in California, at least a few lives could have been saved.

The shooters responsible for the attacks in Paris and California pledged themselves to ISIS.

Another question also comes up during the gun control conversation: what should happen with gun-free zones?

Earlier this year in Chattanooga Tennessee, four unarmed marines were shot dead on a gun-free military base. So the people who risk their lives to defend our country and our freedoms we love so much, can not even defend themselves on one of their own bases.

In a Republican debate, Donald Trump said,  “I think gun free zones are a catastrophe, they’re a feeding frenzy for sick people”.

I completely agree with Trump’s statement. We need to get rid of gun-free zones and start increasing our war against ISIS to keep this country safe.

One proposal made by President Obama on December 6th was to ban people on no-fly lists from being able to get guns. This rule is necessary and is common sense. Some republicans in congress are against this proposal, but if you are a suspected terrorist or criminal, you should not have access to weapons such as a gun. It is just common sense.

But at the end of the day, more gun control would not save lives, but could costs even more lives.
