Reasons Behind Poor WiFi Exposed

The struggles of WiFi connection is seen in this photo. The person in the photo trys to connect but is conflicted by the multiple WiFi names.

Most students at SJHHS experience a great deal of trouble when it comes to WiFi at SJHHS.

With all the restrictions on social media and websites, it is pointless for students to even connect to WiFi.

Over the past year, the WiFi has improved with the unblocking of YouTube, but many of the students still face an unsatisfactoro WiFi connection at SJHHS.

However, students have found a loophole to the websites the WiFi blocks. This loophole is better know as VPN.

VPN (Virtual Private Network)  “is a method used to add security and privacy to private and public networks, like WiFi Hotspots and the Internet,” according to Google.

Many students use VPN to access blocked media such as Snapchat, Instagram, and more. The app has given students the opportunity to experience a full, un-blocked WiFi service at school.

The staff at SJHHS is very well aware of VPN but Nicholai Moguet, our schools tech and WiFi guy, says, “the funny part is there’s not a lot we can do about (VPN)”

As for the limitations on certain apps and websites, Nicholai Moguet said

Ideally we want everything open

— Nicholai Moguet

“It’s one of those security freedom balance things where we say do we close off everything and open stuff up bit by bit as we see that you guys need it, or do we open everything up and close it off as we see that it’s being abused or a distraction.

It might be difficult trying to connect to the WiFi in the first place. Students are told that the WiFi username and password is the same as the log in for the Chromebooks, which does not work for everyone. The login does not always work for many students, but according to Nicholai Moguet, “If you enter the incorrect password three times within 15 minutes, you’ll get locked out for 15 minutes”

As many know, there are 4 different WiFi names at SJHHS: CUSD, CAPOUSD, CAPOUSDGUEST, and CUSDSTU.

The only accessible networks to students are CUSD, CAPOUSD and CAPOUSDGUEST. Recently, the CUSD wifi has disappeared leaving only the two other WiFi networks to be used, taking in consideration that CAPOUSDGUEST does not function with VPN. That leaves students with one WiFi network, CAPOUSD.

In actuality, according to Moguet, all other WiFi networks are basically useless and the WiFi network the school is trying to make the headmaster is CAPOUSD.

SJHHS is not purposefully blocking certain media sources to “torture” students, they’re actually trying to fix it

As previously mentioned, most struggle with logging in to this network. This leads to many students asking the few “chosen ones”, whose username and password actually work, for help.

SJHHS is not trying to make WiFi difficult to students they are just trying to improve it and make it more accessible and easier for the near future.
